Leaders + Figureheads of the Russian Revolution and Civil War
![]()
| The First World War had put great strain on Russia's economy. 1917 saw two revolutions and the depositions of Russia's Czar Nicholas II.
This and the following civil war caused almost all of Europe to be consumed and absorbed in the fighting. Russia's population was divided because of contrasting political beliefs. Some supported the communist and social democratic Red Armies, whereas some supported the White Army. The Whites were anti-communist, anti-Bolshevist and mostly czarist. The Allies of WWI (France + The British Empire) supported the Whites, since the British King was a cousin of the Russian Czar Nicholas II. The Germans were also involved, since they were frustrated by the deposition of Nicholas II and his German wife, Ali. This website features the men who fought and commanded both the Red and White Armies, in addition to those who commanded the intervening Allied and Central Powers troops. |
