Anton Kartashev
(11 July 1875 --> 10 September 1960)
Kartashev was born in Kishtma, Russia in 1875. He studied Theology at The Perm Seminary and at St. Petersburg Spiritual Academy. From 1900 to 1905, he was a lecturer at the Spiritual Academy until his resignation. Then, he became an archivist / librarian there. From 1906 to 1918, he taught Religious History at the St. Petersburg Women's College. Simultaneously, he edited the newspaper Vestnik Zhizni.
On 25 March 1917, he became Assistant Ober-procurator of the Orthodox Church. He was promoted to Ober-procurator in July (i.e. Chairman of the Governing Body of the Church). He held this position for 2 weeks, until he entered the Provisional Government, as Minister for Religion and of Religious Affairs. In 1918, he was arrested by the Communists but escaped to Finland in January 1919. In 1920, he settled in Paris.
He founded the Parisian Theological Institute, where he was a professor until his death in 1960.
