Leaders + Figureheads of the Russian Revolution and Civil War

Ioseb Besarionis dze Jughashvili (A.K.A. Joseph Vissarionovich Stalin)

(18 December 1878 ---> 5 March 1953)

He was born in 1878 in Gori, Georgia. His father was a cobbler. He studied at the Georgian Orthodox Seminary. He was expelled in 1899. After leaving, he studied the writings of Lenin and Marx. He became a Bolshevik in 1903.

Stalin was exiled in Siberia but escaped and returned to Petrograd and became an editor of Pravda. Stalin was elected to the Bolshevik Central Committee. Stalin joined the Politburo in 1918.

Stalin played a decisive role in planning the Bolshevik 1921 invasion of Georgia. Stalin was appointed General Secretary of the Communist Party. He misused his positions and planned the assassination of Trotsky. He became the main figure of the Communist Party. He became known as 'Great Brilliant Genius of Humanity' and 'Great Architect of Communism'. He even had his name inserted into the Soviet National Anthem.

Stalin executed all of the members of Lenin's original cabinet and enforced a New Economic Policy.
Stalin killed and massacred millions (the exact figure is not certain, however credible estimates range from 10 million to 60 million).

Stalin suffered from atherosclerosis throughout his life, due to his heavy smoking.

He died in 1953. Until very recently, the cause of death was regarded as a stroke. However, a new theory has emerged. This is that Stalin was poisoned in his sleep by a right-wing extremist.
