Irakli Tsereteli

(20 November 1881 ----> 20 May 1959) 

Tsereteli was born in Georgia in 1881. His father was a radical writer. Irakli studied Law at Moscow University. After taking part in a riot in 1902, he was briefly exiled to Siberia. Upon his release, he joined the Russian Social Democratic Labour Party, within the Menshevik faction. He became the chief editor of the party newspaper "Kvali" (Trace).

He went to Germany to escape increasing harassment from press. He returned to Russia in 1905. He went to Petrograd in 1917 and joined the Provisional Government as 'Minister of Post and Telegraphs'. This post was renamed 'Minister of Communications'. He held the post from May to August 1917.

After the October Revolution, the Bolsheviks ordered his arrest. He escaped and returned to Georgia. He became a member of the Constituent Assembly. He emigrated to Paris in 1923. 

In the 1940's he lived in the United States, where he wrote several books, including ones on the topics of The Russian Revolution, Civil War and the Independence of Georgia.

He died in New York City in 1959.
