Jukums Vacietis

(11 November 1873 - 28 July 1938)

Jukums was born in Latvia in 1873. He was active during WWI, commanding the 5th Latvian Zemgale Rifle Regiment. During the 1917 revolution and Russian civil war, Vacietis supported the Soviet parties, since he was in favour of having a united 'Soviet Union'. He was commander of the Red Army Latvian Division. He was the first-commander-in-chief of the Red Army. Following the end of the Russian Civil War, he went to Moscow to teach and train militiamen at the RKKA Academy (MV Frunze Military Academy). He was arrested in November 1937 and executed on 28 July 1938 for being an alleged member of the Latvian Fascist Association.
