 Lionel Sadleir-Jackson

(31 December 1876 --> Spring 1932)

Lionel Sadleir-Jackson was born on 31 December 1876. He joined the South Stafford-shire Regiment as a 2nd Lieutenant in 1896 and was promoted to Lieutenant in 1897. He was despatched to South Africa to participate in the 2nd Boer War as a Staff officer.

At the outbreak of WWI, he went to France with the Signal Corps. He was Assistant Director of Signals. He became Acting Commander of the London Regiment in 1917. He became Overall Commander of the 54th Brigade. He was presented with a bar to his DSO in 1918 for his conduct at Albert (1918). He was also awarded a Legion d'Honneur and the Croix de Guerre with Star and Companion of the Order of the Bath.

In late 1918, he followed to command the 2nd Brigade of the Russian Relief Force. He became overall Supreme Commander of The North Russia Campaign. Overall, this was unsuccessful and the Bolsheviks took control of the region in 1919, when Jackson's men were evacuated.

Jackson returned to the UK in the 1920s, commanding a brigade of the Territorial Army. He took retirement from military service in 1925 after 29 years. He became a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society, with which he led expeditions and fieldwork across the globe. In the spring of 1932, he was on a tour of France, when he collided with an electricity pylon in Peronne. This severed the front wheels of the car. He experienced severe head injuries and died shortly after at Estrees-en-Chaussee.
